10 Questions With: Mickey Boardman, Paper Magazine's Editorial Director
I've had the pleasure of working with Mickey Boardman since I started in the fashion and interiors business in 2004. He's one of the hardest working, nicest, smartest, most charitable - and most sequin-bedecked - people in the industry.
As Editorial Director of downtown fashion, music, and pop culture Bible Paper Magazine, Mickey is directly tapped into everything that is hot and happening and zeitgeist-y in NYC and beyond. And, now, he's the author of a weekly column called "Fat and All That" that, in typical Mickey fashion (Fashion? Get it?) is a must-read.
I was lucky enough to sit down with Mickey to ask him my 10 Questions. And, as you might have guessed, his answers are amazing:
What is your favorite part of being big and/or tall?
It’s part of my larger-than-life approach to life.
What is the hardest part of being big and/or tall?
I think it’s finding clothes that fit well. For fancy things I always have them altered, but when it comes to regular every day stuff I often feel like I’m either in something that’s too tight or too baggy since my shape isn’t the long, lean silhouette most clothes are made for.
If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A sparkle top with a tuxedo. It makes every day feel like the Academy Awards.
What is one fashion item every person should own?
Something sequined. You can’t NOT feel glamorous if you’re in sequins.
What are your go-to stores or sites for clothes?
I wear a lot of women’s clothes from Ikram in Chicago and I also love Farfetch for online shopping.
What do you wish retailers would do differently?
I wish they would have options for all sizes!
What does being “body positive” mean to you?
Loving yourself regardless of the numbers- weight, size etc. It’s all about confidence and accepting yourself how you are.
What is your biggest style regret?
That sometimes I’m super lazy and don’t put in the effort to express my personal style. It’s a big commitment to dress up and that’s why I have such respect for people who really do it everyday.
Who are your style icons?
Diana Vreeland, Anna Piaggi, Diane Keaton, Hamish Bowles, Doris Day in the 1960s. The Supremes.
Who do you nominate to answer these questions next?
I need to think about this one!
