Addicted to Food? Watch This Video

I watch every one of Michele Wang’s YouTube videos (no, I don’t wear makeup aside from concealer and the occasional powder to control oil; yes I can tell you all about the best cream blushes and most comfortable lipstick formulas thanks to Michele). But when I tucked into her latest video I didn’t know what I was in for.

Since turning 50, Michele’s been on a health and fitness journey. The video talks about this, but what really blew my mind was her discussion of food and eating addiction (and yes - she separates the the two). She shared how she experienced clarity and freedom when she admitted her powerlessness over her addiction and how it wasn't until she made that admission that she was able to change.

As a food addict, I’ve been fighting my addiction my whole life (Michele describes “white knuckling” when it comes to food - a feeling that really resonates). The idea of admitting powerlessness instead of fighting? Wow. Wow.

You may recognize this as the the first step in AA (“We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.”); the power of admitting powerlessness is that it is the first step to taking back your life. It also seems similar to the concept of “giving up” that I wrote about in a recent post.

From the outside I’d never guess that Michele has a food addiction, and her video served as reminder to me that people are dealing with stuff that you can’t see.

Give her video a watch, give her a follow on Instagram, and let me know what you think about it!
